There are currently more than 100 charities and grassroots organisations that provide critical support to people with past convictions seeking to break the cycle of crime through employment. These organisations possess a wealth of experience and a strong track record in mitigating risk while securing successful outcomes for both the candidates and the companies that employ them. Over the past decade, these organisations have demonstrated a success rate of between 75% and 95% in helping people with past convictions successfully reintegrate into the workforce.

Hidden in plain sight.

However, despite their proven effectiveness, these organisations are often working in isolation, which limits their ability to provide the scale needed to create significant opportunities. The key challenges they face include:

Insufficient resources for large-scale placements: Many organisations struggle to manage the demand for large-scale placements due to limited staff and infrastructure as a result of limited charitable funding streams.
Lack of funding: Around 80% of grassroots charities' funding comes from trusts and foundations, and a small amount of philanthropic donations, yet many of these organisations spend up to 40% of their time searching for new funders, diverting their attention from direct support services.
Regional focus: Many grassroots organisations are regionally focused, limiting the national opportunities for larger companies and reducing the scale at which they can place people with past convictions across the country.
No shared best practice: The lack of centralised resources or networks means organisations are not able to share best practices, limiting their growth and the overall impact of their work.
No central voice for the sector: Grassroots organisations lack a unified, central voice to raise the profile of this important sector. As a result, they struggle to engage with corporations and other stakeholders who may not be aware of the potential benefits of such initiatives.
Inability to provide data insights: Many of these organisations lack the capability to provide data-driven insights on the socio-economic value of placements, which makes it harder for companies to measure the impact and return on investment (ROI) of these efforts.
Addressing these challenges requires a collective approach: By collaborating, pooling resources, and creating a central platform to raise awareness and share best practices, we can expand the opportunities for people with past convictions and help HR directors build genuinely inclusive workplaces. Together, we can break down barriers and make a meaningful impact, ensuring more individuals have access to stable, rewarding employment and the chance to turn their lives, and their families' lives, around.

The Rebuilding Futures Alliance aims to address these challenges by:

Providing a unified national network: We bring together a diverse range of credible charities, creating a seamless network of providers capable of offering employers access to a large and diverse talent pool of people with past convictions.
Serving as an industry voice: As the central body for this initiative, we raise awareness and amplify the impact of the sector, creating incremental funding opportunities for our charity partners. This enables them to spend less time fundraising and more time doing what they do best: providing life-changing employment opportunities for people with past convictions.
Sharing best practice: We facilitate collaboration and knowledge-sharing between employers, charities and social enterprises. By exchanging proven strategies and solutions, we ensure all partners benefit from the latest insights and learnings

The Rebuilding Futures Alliance plays a crucial role in breaking the cycle of crime and providing people with past convictions with the opportunity to rebuild their lives through meaningful employment.
